Museums & Collections
The museums in Zagori are devoted
to local traditional culture and life,
as well as to arts in general
Several Ioannina town museums
host interesting presentations
about Zagori as well.
- The Rizarios Exhibition Center in Monodendri Square, with annual exhibitions of historical and artistic black & white photography.
- The Kostas Lazarides Natural History Museum, with a comprehensive herbarium featuring dried wild flowers of Vikos Canyon and Zagori, situated in the village of Koukouli. These two museums operate under the auspices of the Rizarios Foundation, founded by the benefactors Georgios and Manthos Rizarios, born in Monodendri, Zagori.
- The Sarakatsaniki Stani museum, a faithful representation of a seasonal Sarakatsani settlement, in an open area of 16.000 square meters. The Sarakatsani or Sarakatsans are nomadic, or more accurately transhumant shepherds who used to settle with their sheep in the alpine areas of Zagori, during the summer.
- A collection of 30 characteristic wild flowers of Zagori in color photographs by local photographer Costas Zissis’s, hosted at the Zissis hotel in the village of Aristi.
- Several important museums and collections are in the making or almost ready at the moment and hopefully we will be able to include them here soon. These include the Agapios Tolis Folklore Museum in Kipi, and the Museum of Old Professions in Elaphotopos.
